What Is the Difference Between a Thermal Liner and a Reefer Container?

A reefer container carries its own refrigeration unit. Vents, a compressor, a condenser and a control panel work together to hold a set temperature, usually somewhere between -30°C and +30°C, no matter what the weather outside is doing. Power is non-negotiable, without it, the unit stops protecting your cargo within few hours.

A thermal liner works on a totally on different principle. It's a reflective, insulated layer fitted inside a standard dry container, and it slowly transfers heat through the steel walls rather than generating any cooling. No power, no compressor, no moving parts. For goods that need buffering rather than freezing, that difference in mechanism becomes a difference in cost that shows up on every invoice you get for the life of the shipment.

Frozen seafood, vaccines or anything needing a tight 2°C to 8°C band genuinely needs active refrigeration, and a breakdown mid-transit can wipe out the entire cargo value in one go. That risk belongs on the reefer side of the ledger, and it justifies the extra spend.

Goods that only need protection from heat spikes, condensation and temperature swings, such as milk powder, confectionery, wine or industrial chemicals, don't carry that same failure mode. A well-fitted liner has no compressor to fail, so the biggest risk shifts from mechanical breakdown to installation quality, which is a far easier thing to control.

When Does a Reefer Container Pay for Itself?

A reefer earns its cost when the product genuinely cannot tolerate temperature drift: frozen goods, strict cold-chain pharmaceuticals, fresh seafood, or anything with a compliance requirement written into the contract. On long-haul routes with real freezing or chilling needs, there's no substitute, and comparing it to a liner on cost alone misses the point entirely.
